Eavesdropping at the Coffee Shop

I was sitting in the coffee shop quietly working but overhearing this conversation in the corner.

Two women coming into the coffee shop to have their morning coffee, catch up, settle into some me time after dropping off the kids at school.  It was then I heard my conversation.  The conversation I have with my clients.  The conversation I have with myself:

“I don’t want to over workout because I ate that yesterday”

“I don’t want to belittle or judge myself because I have that roll in the mirror”

“I don’t want to say no to a bite of cake because I am all freaked out about my body”

But God….

It makes me want to weep.  I have done all those things.  I have thought all those things.  The things we put ourselves through as women.  The wanting to belong.  The wanting to be pretty.  The wanting to be loved.  The wanting to be accepted and acceptable.

But God….

The cry of most women’s hearts.  The anguish as we look in the mirror and we don’t believe we measure up to some false image that we have deemed acceptable, pretty, perfect, and the list rattles on.

My heart aches as I listen to this 20 something juggle family, marriage, body, finances.  Really aren’t we burdened enough without questioning our own body?

To hear her say…But God…  Going back to the Lord and saying how do you see me?  What do you believe about my body?  What do you want me to believe and know about my body?

It makes me know we as women are over it.  Those three words God gave me months ago…

Counterfeit |  Idol | Seduction.

We have been seduced by the weight loss industry, the media industry, the porn industry… to have counterfeit bodies, counterfeit expectations, eating counterfeit food.  We have made idols out of our bodies, weight loss, the image we see in the mirror.  UGH!!!!

It is a lie.  We belittle ourselves and turn ourselves into anxious, hot messes trying to chase a lie.  Living up to some marketing image that doesn’t even exist except at the end of a Photoshop save button.

Wake up…  God said, “Wake up.  You are being tossed to and fro by the deceiver.  Take back your power.  I made you in my likeness and image.  You are beautiful.  Care about your heart.  Care about the outpouring of your heart, not just on others and on me but on you. What is the outpouring of your heart toward you?  You can’t love me and love your neighbor when you have hate in your heart for yourself.  For out of the heart the mouth speaks.  There is life and death in the power of the tongue.  Watch your words my sweet child.  Watch those words you speak over yourself, over your body. Love you.  I made you.  You are perfect.  You may have gotten off balanced but we will correct that together.  See you through my eyes…. I love you.  I am crazy about you.  You are lovely.  You are kind.  You are wonderfully and perfectly made in my image.”

Wow, all that from just overhearing a snippet of a conversation!

Every day I meet women who have gotten off balance with food, so much so that they don’t even know what to eat anymore.  Every day I meet women that have gotten off balance with the image they see in the mirror.  Every day I meet women that are broken hearted for a host of reasons that they have used food to numb out and weight as if it were bubble wrap for the soul.

Every day I also watch women heal.  I watch them branch out and try new foods that are alive and nourish their body, while tasting good.  I watch them reclaim their power in their thought life, in the actions they take; questioning the old ways and having the courage to step into new.

Every day I watch people heal with God’s love and new tools.
